Life on a British Flower Farm: Welcome to Lower Norton Flower Farm
Flower filled days.
Welcome to the Flower Farm Journal
There is something about a flower farm that never quite stands still. One week the field looks quietly asleep, with little signs of life tucked just beneath the soil. The next week, almost without warning, green shoots begin appearing everywhere and suddenly the whole place feels alive again.
Running a flower farm means learning to live very much by the rhythm of the seasons. Some days are spent knee-deep in compost sowing seeds, others are filled with armfuls of flowers heading off to weddings, workshops or into the hands of visitors wandering through the field with a bucket and a pair of snips.
No two weeks are ever quite the same. Lower Norton Flower Farm sits within our wider family farming business here in Hampshire. The flower farm began rather modestly in 2021 — with a small patch of flowers and a simple idea quietly scribbled down on paper. At the time I don’t think any of us quite imagined what it might grow into.
The Pick Your Own Garden
What started as a love of growing flowers has gradually evolved into something a little bigger — a working flower field, a creative space for floristry, and a place where people can come to slow down for a while, pick flowers, learn something new or simply sit with a cup of tea and a piece of cake beside the Potting Shed. Flowers have a remarkable way of bringing people together. Some are chosen for joyful occasions like weddings and celebrations, others are quietly gathered to say goodbye. Many simply end up on someone’s kitchen table, bringing a small moment of beauty to an ordinary day.
And that, in many ways, is what this flower farm has always been about. Growing flowers that feel connected to the land they come from — seasonal, characterful and a little bit unruly, much like an English garden.
Growing English country garden flowers with love.
This journal is simply a place to share a little more of life behind the scenes on the farm. I’ll share what is happening in the field through the seasons, the flowers we’re growing, a few tips along the way and the occasional story from life here at Lower Norton. If you’ve visited the farm before, you’ll probably recognise a few familiar corners. And if you haven’t yet made it here, consider this an invitation. There is usually tea, coffee and cake somewhere nearby… and quite often a bucket of flowers waiting.
Thank you for reading this far and, I hope that we will be able to welcome you to our flowery haven in the very near future.
Best wishes
